Hi, I’m Anoosha!

I like to call myself
a woman of many hats:

Because choosing just one is impossible for me!

I’m a Pakistani-Canadian illustrator-extraodinaire based in Dallas, TX. With a decade of experience in character design, animation, and publishing, I’ve illustrated over forty children’s books (and counting!) and am currently working on my fourth authored title.

As a kid who rarely saw herself in the books she loved, I now create the kind of stories I once needed… ones that celebrate kids for who they are.

Before finding my path in kid-lit, I earned my BFA in Illustration in Switzerland, worked in animation, and slowly built my freelance career through a lot of trial, error, and late-night Googling. Coming from the Global South with limited access to resources, I know how hard it can be to navigate the creative industry…

That’s why I’m passionate about helping other artists avoid the same traps.

Through my YouTube channel and the resources here on my website, I share tips on illustration and the business of art, making it all a little less daunting for emerging creatives.

These days, I’m juggling life as a new mom and all the amazing projects I’m lucky enough to work on as a full-time illustrator.

From picture books to public speaking, each part of my work lets me explore storytelling in a different way. I love trying new things, stretching my creative muscles, and finding new ways to connect through my art.

Let’s create something wonderful together!

Every artist has their own unique and winding path, and I’d love to share mine with you.

90s

I grew up in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Pakistan. As the perpetual ‘new kid’ (I went to seven different schools!), I found comfort in books - but I never saw myself in them.

2012

Dropped out from my first university after one semester and enrolled in Ceruleum Ecole d’arts Visuels in Switzerland to study illustration (a program taught entirely in French, because I love a challenge!)

Anoosha Syed poses in front of a mural featuring her artwork at an exhibition. She wears a pink shirt and necklace, gesturing playfully toward her illustration of a red-haired woman. The wall behind her is decorated with various colorful paintings.

2015

Graduated and moved to Canada where I got my first animation studio job, agent and book project. I had zero connections, and had to start from scratch to build my network.

2017

After leaving my first job, I faced two years of studio rejections. I worked a part-time marketing gig. Feeling stuck, I took a leap of faith and started an arts podcast which sparked my love for education.

Anoosha Syed jumps into a pit of yellow balls at a colorful inflatable rainbow attraction. She wears a black outfit and has a joyful expression as she leaps with her arms raised. The bright, playful setting adds to the fun atmosphere.

2018

My book Bilal Cooks Daal was awarded the APALA honor and I became confident in my illustration work. I decided to quit my dream of working in animation, got a new agent and focus on publishing.

2020

I realized I have my own stories to share with the world. I started writing and got a two-book deal with Penguin Random House. Feeling stuck during the pandemic, I decided to start my Youtube channel.

Studios took notice of my unique voice, and I started doing freelance animation work for Nickelodeon, Disney Jr, Netflix and many more dream clients!

2022

A huge year for me! My debut authored book releases, I put on my first solo gallery show, and collab’d with Target on a holiday collection.

After being a digital artist for most of my career, I find new love in traditional painting.

2024

I became a mom and now I spend my days juggling parenting, creating art, and being endlessly inspired by my little one.

It’s been tough to slow down and rethink how I manage my career, but I never back down from a challenge!

2025

My third authored book The Salt Princess released in April, and I’m currently working on my fourth.

This marks ten years of my career, and I’m excited to keep doing this for many more decades.

Follow along as I continue my art journey!

  • My name is pronounced ah-NOO-shah SAY-yid

You ‘say it’ like Syed. :) You can find a pronunciation recording here.

  • I was born in Pakistan, but I moved around quite a bit growing up. I have so far lived in Dubai, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Toronto, and now settled in Dallas, Texas.

  • I briefly attended the American University of Sharjah, studying Visual Communication. I hated it, and quit after a semester. I then received my BFA in Illustration at Ceruleum Ecole d’arts Visuels in Lausanne, Switzerland. It’s a three-year intensive art program taught in French.

  • My process for each book is slightly different, but I have made several videos going over my process in detail! You can find a playlist here.

  • All serious inquiries can be sent to my agent at taylor@fullcircleliterary.com. I’m afraid I don’t take on self-published projects.

  • During my last year in art school I illustrated a mock picture book as part of my senior thesis and created an online portfolio with my best work. I submitted that portfolio to dozens of publishers, magazines, stationery companies, etc, and cold-emailed art directors and editors. I submitted to contests and calls to art and constantly updated my social media with new work. I went to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair with my class, handed out business cards to publishers, and showed my portfolio for reviews. I also signed onto an illustration agency that I had previously submitted online to.

In my last semester at art school, I was very fortunate to have gotten an offer to illustrate my first picture book through that agency. After graduating, a publisher I had met up with at the Bologna book fair I mentioned earlier also offered me a book project.

After I graduated and moved to Canada, I initially worked full-time at an animation studio, but worked on picture books in the evenings. After a few years, I realized my true calling was publishing, so I made a career shift. The rest is history.

  • Check out my guides on my resources page!

Make sure you have an online portfolio (preferably with a domain name, but not required). It should be clean, professional and easy to navigate with your best pieces. Have art samples in your portfolio that reflects the kind work that you want to be doing. Wanna illustrate books but haven’t yet? Illustrate a mock piece specifically for your portfolio, like sample pages of a fairy tale or mock book covers!

About 80% of my clients find me through social media. I try to maintain a strong online presence, regularly posting online to increase exposure and networking with colleagues, possible clients etc. I also table at conventions like TCAF and Lightbox Expo.

Make a list of places you want to work with and cold email. If you are not getting any responses, create fresh work for your portfolio and then repeat.
